Welcome to GREEN MANGOES AND CHILI SAUCE, a collection of stories and memories triggered by the taste, smell and sight of the foods of South-East Asia. In a word, these stories can be bitter-sweet. Bitter. And sweet.


This is not a cookbook. If it’s a cookbook you want, you’re in the wrong place. This is about the memories that a certain taste, smell or even sight of a particular food might trigger. They are not always pleasant. In fact, they can be downright visceral and awful. Think “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover,” a powerful film that may hit you in the gut. There’s always a story that goes with the memory of food.

But it doesn’t have to be that way all the time. There are many wonderful associations with food, and this collection has those, too. I put my hand down to write and I have no idea where it’s going to take me. I am as surprised as you sometimes.
